VA Black Hills Health Care System
Technology is making it easier for Veterans to manage their appointments
VEText was launched on March 28th to provide Veterans an easy text message system to remind them of appointments and allow them to cancel an appointment with a simple text message reply.
Since the launch, thousands of text messages have been sent to Veterans throughout VA Black Hills Health Care System. VEText is just one of the new technologies Veterans can use to make managing their health care easier.
The first text message will go out seven days before the appointment and then the Veteran will receive a reminder two days before the appointment. Text messages do not replace the letters, postcards and automated phone calls Veterans already receive for appointment reminders, but are just another communication channel available between VA Black Hills and Veterans. Because the program automatically enrolls Veterans it’s important for Veterans to have current contact information with VA Black Hills.
“One of the best features is the convenience for Veterans to cancel appointments. Veterans can provide a response to either keep or cancel their appointment through the text message prompts. When cancelling, the appointment slot will become available to another Veteran seeking care," said Teresa Forbes, Public Affairs Officer. “We completely understand when life happens and the appointment time is no longer convenient. The overall goal of text reminders is to increase our access to care by reducing the number of missed opportunities.”
