The Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department and the Fort Meade VA Medical Center Fire Department responded to a house fire at about 6 p.m. Monday, February 11. The crews arrived on scene within minutes of the call and stayed for about three hours. Unfortunately, the house, located in an alley near Deadwood and Pine streets, was completely destroyed in the fire.

“Both the Fort Meade and the Hot Springs VA Fire Departments are deeply committed to assisting our community Fire Departments,” said George Mandas, VA Black Hills Health Care System Fire Chief. “I am proud of their professionalism and willingness to assist.”

Luckily, two children who were in the house at the time of the fire were ushered out of the home by a neighbor before flames engulfed the house. The Fire Marshal was on the scene Monday night, but did not determine the cause of the fire.

The Fort Meade VA Medical Center Fire Department responds to about 30 community calls per year.
