VA Black Hills' Medical Centers are rich in history.  The Fort Meade campus served as a cavalry post from 1878 to the end of World War II.  The entire military reservation was transferred to the Veterans Administration for a hospital in 1944.  The Hot Springs VA hospital was completed in 1938, joining a complex of buildings previously known as the Battle Mountain Sanitarium, a tuberculosis hospital begun in 1902 which became one of the original National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers.  A small museum is located on the Hot Springs VA grounds.
